Exploring markets for Medicinal Plants. Advice. Open till 18 February.

Dear members,

The management of Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary (BWS) based in Trashi Yangtshe, eastern Bhutan is in the process of implementing a community-based medicinal plant project under the GEF-SGP (UNDP) funding. The main aim of the project is conservation of biodiversity through sustainable community-based medicinal plant cultivation and marketing thereby improving the livelihoods of 36 local residents living within the BWS.

There are two project sites, one located at Shingphel (North of BWS) situated at an altitude of 3600 meters high for the cultivation of high altitude medicinal plants and another one located at Tshangwog at an altitude of 1850 meters high (east of BWS) for the cultivation of temperate medicinal plants.

The project is currently in the process of prioritizing medicinal plants that will be planted at the project sites. See current list http://www.solutionexchange-un.net.bt/docs/res03020901.doc (43 KB). In this regard, we would like to explore markets in Bhutan and within neighboring countries for these medicinal plants. To this end, valuable recommendations from the members on the following will be highly appreciated.

• What would be the demand/potential markets (national and international) for these kinds of medicinal plants?
• What other kinds of species would be of importance for plantation?
• What are the environmental impacts to consider while growing these medicinal plants?
• Marketing strategies for such medicinal plants
