Financial Services for rural communities-Experiences; Advice.Open till 10 October 2008

Dear all,

I have been asked by a colleague who works in the financial sector to post this query on his behalf:

It is proven fact that the rural credit increases the income of the rural household by augmenting the endowments and the capacity to diversify their livelihood. However, in several countries the rural credit program has increased the debt burden and it has become suicidal.

In Bhutan too, there is a general feeling that the rural households with low asset endowments do not have access to the micro credit. Given the subsistence economic activities, we are exploring the possibility of sustainable micro credit and at the same time create positive impact on the livelihood of rural communities in Bhutan.

As such, I would like to seek members’ advice/views and ideas on the following:

Types of financial services suitable for the rural communities
Design of such financial services/product in order to sustain in the long run
Sustainability of rural banking in Bhutan
Experiences of countries similar to Bhutan

Your inputs will be great help in upcoming up with good financial services for the rural communities in Bhutan.
